OnePlus X: design and processing

For a smartphone under 300 euros the OnePlus X is amazingly beautifully designed and high quality finish. One has the feeling of holding a much more expensive smartphone in hand. Unfortunately, the OnePlus X is so smooth that it often slips off of surfaces. Remedy the free supplied rubber boot.

Even the great and powerful brother OnePlus 2 looked very good. But the cheaper OnePlus X feels even more exclusive. Especially the glass back is a Augenschmeichler. Here, both colors give a sophisticated look, whether in glossy black or matt ceramic robe.

Thanks to the compact design of the five inches OnePlus X is very good in the hand. The power button and volume rocker are radially cut and fit very nicely in the look of the frame. They are located at the right edge at mid-height and can be operated excellently with the right thumb or index and middle finger of the left hand.

The frame of the OnePlus X is made of anodized metal, were etched in the 17 hair fine lines with acid into it. The Onyx version weighs 138 grams and the ceramic model 160 grams. Both variants pull greasy fingerprints almost magically, as has been shown.

The difference between the two OnePlus-X editions is more than meets the eye. He is not only the metal frame. The ceramic model also has a slightly angled edge. The Onyx version, however, has rounded display glass Gorilla Glass 3. That is very similar to 2.5D glass, as we know it from the Nexus 6 or from HTC One A9. The ribbed edge provides more grip. And that is essential, because you certainly do not want to drop the sensitive glass-metal smartphone.

In the SIM card dual carriage either two SIM card or a SIM card and a microSD card can plug in. Thus OnePlus did not repeat a mistake of the OnePlus Two. That the option of memory expansion is missing. That would have been fatal in OnePlus X, for its 16 GB of internal memory will be filled certainly fast. But using the appropriate card slot, up to 128 GB can be retrofitted.

The double grill at the bottom suggests stereo speakers. But only one of its halves emits sound. The other only hides the microphone. we discover more smears against the big brother at the bottom of OnePlus-X case. Only the large model provides a fingerprint sensor that the OnePlus X is absent.

The OnePlus X uses capacitive buttons for navigation. This saves a few square centimeters on the screen, because you have to show no software keys. If the latter are rather you, you can it in the options activate.

The notification of the slide OnePlus 2 at the left edge also occurs when OnePlus X. He quickly establishes peace, because you can mute with it the OnePlus X. This is faster than going through the menus.

The notification LED can be, unlike that of many other smartphones, configure free. So you can change for each app and quickly recognize what it is for notification the colors.

On the back, we are pleased to note that the camera lens plan was framed in the case. Many other manufacturers have installed protruding optics that involve a sensitive disadvantage. Such devices can not lie flat on the table, except they are placed on display.

For both versions of the X OnePlus there are appropriate cases in several colors. A transparent soft plastic cover is free of and makes the OnePlus X less slippery. You'll also find a matching pair in-ear headphones, which should sound exquisitely next prettier cases in the catalog.

OnePlus X: Display

The OnePlus X is the first OnePlus device with an AMOLED display. It is only five inches tall, and thus the most compact in the family. OnePlus was smart and has designed the user interface very dark. So the excellent black levels of the display technology are very advantage. If you watch a lot of videos, the battery life, unfortunately, is considerably reduced.

In keeping with the OLED display is now optional Ambient display mode. The well-known Motorola feature displays notifications on the display when you hold your hand over the proximity sensor (in selfie cam). Only a small area then shines in "duo-tone" as OnePlus calls it, while the rest remains dark and no electricity consumed.

Of course, you must not use the said dark theme. You can adjust the color palette and the complete design of the user interface. OnePlus has installed the matching board resources. However, we have noticed that the display is very energy-hungry and enormously claims the battery while playing or video-watching. After about four hours and the final OnePlus X needs to be recharged.

OnePlus X: Software

The OnePlus the X software is called Oxygen OS and is based on Android 5.1.1. It is equipped with surprisingly little additional software and lets you almost nine gigabytes of free memory for user apps and photos. OnePlus is limited to apps that are actually used in everyday life. The additions focus on adapting the user interface. You can use skins and customize the behavior of the interface in some places.

You can about readjust the color temperature of the display or change the colors of individual accents. A Dark theme gives the entire surface a very dark, high-contrast look. For when you switch the display can configure your gestures that arouse OnePlus X in certain modes from standby.

You can choose between capacitive hardware buttons or software keys. The software keys can you replace and expand. The same goes for the quick adjustment entries. This diversity is OnePlus-typical, but compared to other smartphones lush.

Left is the home screen in the Shelf Oxygen OS. In it you will find weather info, your frequently accessed apps, contacts, and more. It could turn into a useful feature over time. but you can also disable the additional page.

The OnePlus X still uses the actually current Android 6.0 Marshmallow. Nevertheless, it is regularly receives security updates and it already offers marshmallow features. So Oxygen OS has an authorization manager that allows your apps can revoke permissions after installation.

made easily modified

Unlike many other smartphones, the devices of OnePlus can easily unlock it. A guide on the official forum shows you step by step how you unlock the OnePus X, rooting, can be equipped with a custom recovery and with third-party firmware. This makes the OnePlus X a coveted smartphone for modders.

OnePlus X: Performance

The OnePlus X has an excellent performance for its price segment. In it, the hardware of the flagships from the year 2014. To put it in games top performance and good graphics. Thanks to 3 GB RAM its multi-tasking performance is brilliant. Also, constant stress can not bring up a sweat, so that the power remains constant. The internal 16-gigabyte flash memory is too short of remaining nine gigabytes, but can be expanded via microSD card.

In benchmark tests, the OnePlus X joins on par with the 2014er flagships OnePlus One and Nexus 6 approximately. Compared with currently equally priced smartphones, it cuts off outstanding. But the theoretical performance is overshadowed by an unpleasant effect at the beginning of its working life.

The OnePlus X has a certain lead time until it runs smoothly. It stutters occasionally during and after the first device. However, if the apps are set up once and creeps a routine in the system, the OnePlus X behaves considerably better.

OnePlus X: Audio

Only one of the two grills at the bottom of OnePlus X sounds sound. This is mono sound is sufficient; but no more. But it must be noted that it still offers an above-average volume and sound quality that is unrivaled in the price range.

The sound quality with telephone calls fully sufficient, but here you must not expect too much. To make calls, it is sufficient but for a good noise suppression or a premium microphone you can look far. For the price but this is more than acceptable.

After connecting a headset (there is none included) gets your access to an FM radio. The pre-installed tuner is not so bad.

OnePlus X: Camera

The OnePlus-X camera delivers good results medium. The main camera distorts slightly reddish, needs a lot of light and a steady hand. The selfie cam, however, eclipses faces easily. Videos can be recorded in slow motion or time-lapse.

  • To test gallery in full resolution

The OnePlus-X-camera equipped with a 13 megapixel ISOCELL sensor from Samsung. Its f / 2.2 aperture is not very transparent and provides in dark environments to noise. This noise is not well compensated by the post-processing in the camera app. In the front camera OnePlus uses an 8 megapixel sensor with even smaller f / 2.4 aperture.

For video fans Camera Full HD video records. Slow motion shots are taken at 120 frames per second in HD resolution. As with the OnePlus 2 there are quick-start options for the camera that triggers your either through gestures on the lock screen or the assignment of a key on OnePlus X.

Apart from the noise, the OnePlus-X camera suffers from a very low dynamic range. Some scenes like in the picture above you have to opt for completely black water or a completely white swan. the camera in HDR mode, it will not succeed to capture the details of the light and dark areas equally. However, the camera in Sony's more expensive Xperia-Z5 family was the only smartphone camera that could master this discipline really good.

OnePlus X Battery

The battery life of the OnePlus X lies in mediocrity. A full day you get back to the battery. Four hours of screen time are to get over nothing special, but in the smartphone market, in view of the good performance of the OnePlus X. The battery can not be replaced and does not support fast charging technology.

The lack of quick-charge support is morose. Although it is in this price range also not common, but it would have been theoretically available with the built Snapdragon 801 processor. It makes for sluggish charging time of the OnePlus X of around two hours would be reduced to little more than an hour.

In our editorial two colleagues OnePlus X constantly use for several months. Both would buy it again or recommend friends to buy. Design and processing foreshadow anyone that is the OnePlus X is a modestly priced smartphone.

In terms of performance no competitor in this price range can match. Better photos but you shoot with the Moto G (2015). And more battery life you get with the Samsung Galaxy A3 (2016 Edition).
