ASUS ZenFone 3: Design and workmanship
As already mentioned, Asus improves noticeably, especially in terms of design and manufacturing quality. Especially coming at ZenFone 3 better materials are used, it is made entirely of glass and metal. Thus, it is reminiscent of the Samsung Galaxy S6, confusion is excluded, since there are clear differences. Also, the ZenFone 3 is very prone to fingerprints: Again, but a known problem in the use of glass produced. The ZenFone 3 is much higher quality than its predecessor. © AndroidPIT
As I said, one can notice a significant step forward even in processing. It feels great gap dimensions leave little to be desired and it creaks or wobbles nothing. In short, Asus has done a really good job here and must not hide from the competition.
Compared to the ZenFone 2 clear differences in appearance can be felt here. Really easy to use but it is not necessarily only by the size. Unfortunately, the reverse is not bent, so the smartphone is not very good in the hand. The back is prone to fingerprints. © AndroidPIT
The front is dominated, of course, from the screen, the screen-to-body ratio, however, is not among the best on the market (it is only 70.6%). This area around the display is however used as Asus uses a capacitive controls and saves so the space on the screen. the multitasking button, the back button is as usual left, right: Unlike Samsung, Asus keeps this to the requirements of Google.Power button and volume rocker are on the right. © AndroidPIT
The mandatory fingerprint sensor located on the back of ZenFone 3. This is not like many competitors round but rectangular. In my testing, he has always responded quickly and accurately. He is not only good for unlocking, but can also accept calls or trigger the camera. On the back are the camera and the square fingerprint sensor. © AndroidPIT
Directly at the camera over the biometric sensor. This is unfortunately something about, making the smartphone when it lies on the back, a little wobble. The camera is equipped with a dual LED flash and auto focus with laser focus.
In summary, one can say that it is the ZenFone 3 is a nice smartphone, but the design is not really independent. It is nice, but nothing special.
ASUS ZenFone 3: Display
As mentioned above, the ZenFone 3 is available with a total of three screen sizes, 5.2 inches, 5.5 inches and the top model with 5.7 inches. Our test device is the normal Zenfone 3, which is equipped with a 5.5 inch screen, which dissolves in Full HD (1920 x 1080) and thus has a pixel density of 401 dpi. QHD would have been desirable, but brings good only for VR applications a real advantage. For the latter, the ZenFone No. 3 is the first choice. To ensure optimum safety, Asus Gorilla Glass is a 2.5D.The screen of the Zenfone 3 is very bright
The display has a good impression in my tests. It is very bright. The readability is excellent and the IPS display has very good contrast. Even in direct light, the ZenFone 3 here has no weaknesses. Also reflections keep striking back and the display is always easy to read. The display of the Zenfone 3 is very bright. © AndroidPIT
One complaint is there but the color fidelity. Basically, the display tends to be blue. Here, however, remedial action can fortunately be created in the settings. Simply change the color mode to "Balanced" and you see the colors better. In the settings you can adjust the color reproduction. © AndroidPIT
The screen has quite surprised me, of course, in a positive sense. Fits to the color reproduction of something, he can convince.
ASUS ZenFone 3: Software
We come to the biggest problem of ZenFone 3, the software in the guise of ZenUI 3.0. Asus is one of the manufacturers who make Android prefer scratch. When ZenFone 3 leading to the biggest weakness of the smartphone. In terms of hardware, Asus has made great steps forward, only the software is still lagging significantly behind. The ZenFone 3 ships with Android 6.0.1. © AndroidPIT
The latest version of ZenUI based 6.0.1 marshmallow on Android, but the differences from the version on Android Lollipop are unfortunately low. The number of pre-installed apps has been reduced. Many surviving can disable the further, however, are not uninstalled. It would be desirable, of course, here that one could simply remove unwanted and unneeded apps and thus frees space.many apps are still installed on the ZenFone third © AndroidPIT
But what really annoys is the number of functions and features that are not useful and really are not necessary. Especially the cleanup Apps can drive one to despair. Not only do they use valuable memory (even if 64GB is not too short) and annoy a daily uninteresting notifications. So you want to be disturbed by such useless apps, there is no way past the deactivation of services.Cleanup Apps of manufacturers can be annoying, as in this case. © AndroidPIT
ASUS ZenFone 3: Performance
The ZenFone 3 is equipped with a mid-range processor, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 625. However, it is quite unfair, so to call him middle class, since Qualcomm has ensured that it can be now also coupled with more memory.
The normal ZenFone 3 is available in two variants: the smaller one with 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of main memory and larger with 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of main memory. We had a look at the larger version.
Compared to the former, the ZenFone 2, are obvious. The latter was with Intel Z3580 / Z3560 processor and 2 GB of RAM significantly weaker on the chest. The performance of the ZenFone 3 again left little to be desired. Of course it is far from the performance of a Galaxy S7, but from a middle-class smartphone in this price range you can not expect that too. The UI runs very smoothly and there was rarely long pauses. For a normal user, the performance is sufficient absolute.
Here are some test results for our benchmark Fans:
|Geekbench 4.0 single-core||Geekbench 4.0 Multi-Core||PCMark Work Performance||3DMark Slingshot OpenGL 3.0||3DMark Slingshot OpenGL 3.1||Google Octane||3DMark Ice Storm Unlimited 2.0|
For complex games the ZenFone 3 is an Adreno 506 GPU uses. By comparison, even the Moto Z Play uses this graphics chip. With this GPU, the ZenFone 3 certainly provides good results and games like Riptide GP2 or asphalt 8 ran smoothly. Here, the heat generation stopped fortunately limited.
should not fail to mention the USB Type-C port, which unfortunately is still based on USB 2.0. But at least the ZenFone a dual SIM 3 enabled phone. but noted that only can taking advantage of UMTS and LTE, the first SIM card, the second has to settle for GSM. NFC one looks at Zenfone 3 unfortunately in vain.
ASUS ZenFone 3: Audio
The ZenFone 3, like many of its competitors only a mono speaker. This is located at the bottom of the smartphone and can be covered quickly as when playing games or when enjoying videos. but the sound is good and very neutral. It is louder than you would expect and therefore makes a lot of fun. As is so often the sound quality leaves with increasing volume, the sound will then increasingly tinny. This problem, however, can be observed in many smartphones. The sound of the mono speaker of Zenfone 3 is very neutral
The ZenFone 3 is also certified for Hi-Res audio, a label that is particularly good sound. In reality, the difference from other smartphones is hardly to remember. Therefore, the Exam Track makes more like a marketing gag than they would be really meaningful. The sound is good, but not outstanding. The mitglieferten headphones are not recommended. © AndroidPIT
ASUS ZenFone 3: Camera
Even when the camera Asus has risen course. Had the ZenFone 2 nor a 13-megapixel camera, was the 3 ZenFone a 16 megapixel camera donated. Both cameras have an f / 2.0 aperture. The new smartphone also has another laser-based autofocus, dual LED flash and video can in 4K resolution (full HD at 60 frames per second) will be included.
But how good are the pictures? Quite compelling. The pictures are really good and have very neutral colors. The contrast leaves little to be desired. The focus is very fast and the optical image stabilizer improves the outcome noticeable. Even in low light the ZenFone 3 shows no weaknesses and demonstrated here outperformed as the Honor 8. Here, the manual mode is recommended everything from the camera rauszuholen.Above all, the manual mode allows for many settings. © AndroidPIT
Also a special mode brings the ZenFone 3: the super-resolution mode. Here, four images are combined and the arising image with a 65-megapixel resolution. As long as your not however want to print poster-size your pictures, this mode is not recommended absolutely.

So videos look good despite the lack of optical stabilization, Asus equips the ZenFone 3 an electronic image stabilizer. The front camera is designed especially for selfies. It dissolves with 8 megapixels and also an f / 2.0 aperture is obstructed. The results are good and better than many competitors, but not outstanding.
ASUS ZenFone 3: Battery
The battery of 3000 mAh ZenFone 3 summarizes. As in most current smartphones, the battery is also permanently installed and can not be changed.
In everyday use, the ZenFone 3 but presented as a true endurance runner. I have come loose to 1.5-day period. Does your your smartphone is not quite as common, you can also count on two days. In the course of a day I use SMS, WhatsApp, surfing the Internet, listening to music, watched a couple of YouTube videos. Of course, I made a few phone calls. Even under load, such as power-hungry 3D games, the Zenfone 3 here has no weaknesses. During a one-hour gaming session with asphalt 8 it lost only 15% of its battery capacity, the same kind smartphones suffer here quickly more than 20% a.The ZenFone 3 comes with USB Type-C connector. © AndroidPIT
In our battery benchmark test PCMark the ZenFone 3 comes to produces outstanding 10 hours, 17 minutes full screen brightness. In this test, the normal phone usage is charged with all major life processes and the time between 80% to 20% of the batteries were measured.
Is the ZenFone three times but the energy from, it can be charged 3.0 quickly thanks to Quick Charge. According to Asus, the smartphone should be able to be loaded so within 39 minutes 60% battery capacity. To the minute I can not confirm, but the time seems very realistic. In just over 90 minutes, the ZenFone 3 was fully charged.

Already in 2015, Asus has succeeded with the ZenFone 2 a surprise. The latest variant, the ZenFone 3 can convince in our test. It's a great smartphone that is sure to appeal to many potential buyers. Asus has thus moved the bar for himself upward. Much certainly not lacking in the ZenFone 3: with a premium design, a good camera, a very good screen and excellent battery life it makes its buyers happy. The Zenfone 3 has everything your heart desires, but it lacks the special to convince all around.
The problem? It lacks the ZenFone 3 that certain something that sets it apart from the Konkkurrenz in this price range. For 399 euros, there are, for example, already a OnePlus 3, with a solid record of performance-wise more. Only any discount promotions can still make 3 to real value for winning the Asus ZenFone. Ultimately, the ZenFone 3 remains just a good mid-range smartphones, which it can not absorb so right with the top smartphone competitors. The search for the "unbelievable" So continues with Asus ...
