Samsung Galaxy A3 (2017): Price and Availability
Unsurprisingly, Samsung has introduced the new versions of the Galaxy A3 and Galaxy A5 at this year's CES in Las Vegas. The A-Series is one of the most popular middle-class series and it was expected that we will see this year representatives of this series.
The Galaxy A3 (2017) is available at a suggested retail price of 329 euros in gold, pink and blue since 2 February 2017th For online retailers like Amazon.de all colors are not yet available.Amazon.deGalaxy A3 (2017)€ 329.00To the shop
Compared to the 2016er model, the Galaxy A3 has become more expensive. we explain the reasons for this further below.
Samsung Galaxy A3 (2017): Design and workmanship
In terms of design, this year Galaxy A3 (and of course the Galaxy A5) is a worthy successor of the 2016er model. On paper, there are no major differences from the previous model: the 4.7-inch smartphone measures 135.4 x 66.2 x 7.9 mm, so it has similar dimensions as the predecessor and weighs 135 grams only three grams more.
Overall, we find typical Samsung design before. We see the oval home button and the Samsung logo above the speaker. It is reminiscent of the larger Galaxy S7. But the new A-Series also introduces some minor changes us.
After a tough end of 2016 under the impact of grade-7-scandal Samsung has to convince many potential customers again. This is not easy, especially in the highly competitive mid-size business. The headphone port is still present. © AndroidPIT
The speaker, who has been found at the bottom of the smartphone, was moved to the right side. Above all, players will be happy that way you will not run more risk of this cover again by hand. In addition, the change from USB Micro-B USB Type-C comes. The SIM card slide, which can accommodate a MicroSD card is moved from the right side up. On the back of course the camera that fortunately survives no piece is located. An important new feature: Even the Galaxy A3 (2017) now has a fingerprint sensor.
The workmanship is typical Samsung very good and feels more like high end than to midrange. then it is not enough quite to the level of a Galaxy S7 or S7 Edge but approach yet. On the back is back glass and the edges are similarly rounded as its big brother. The SIM card slide is now at the top. © AndroidPIT
Another useful and new feature: The Galaxy A3 (2017) is now certified to IP68 and thus waterproof. A mid-range smartphone with microSD expansion and a fingerprint sensor, this is even waterproof and costs less than 350 euros is a fair offer, not only for Samsung ratios. We dared and checks the water resistance and it has the water actually survived (we nevertheless recommend any imitation).
The Galaxy A3 (2017) is relatively small, at 4.7 inches in today's smartphone world. It is therefore really great in the hand. In my opinion, the compact dimensions are one of the greatest strengths of this unit. Through the built-glass it is a bit slippery course, but not so much as that I was worried when operating. Above all, it is wonderful to get it to operate with one hand. Finally a small, manageable but also high-quality smartphone. © AndroidPIT
Samsung Galaxy A3 (2017): Display
Technically, there are no differences to its predecessor. Here, too, we find a 4.7-inch Super AMOLED screen, which dissolves in HD (720 x 1280 pixels). Thus, the pixel density is 331 ppi, the same as the 2016er model. Also the Gorilla Glass used is the same: Gorilla Glass fourthSize and resolution of the display are identical to those of its predecessor. © AndroidPIT
It is surprising, however, that even the so-called always-on display is to be found in the Galaxy A3 (2017), which we know from other Samsung devices. Thus, you always have all the information at a glance, to have to turn on extra-without the display. In the Home button, the fingerprint sensor is located. © AndroidPIT
A small but nice detail: By default, we see when you turn off the display, the old TV sets animation, in which the screen is turned off from the center outward. This animation is quite to have on other devices, but here you can see the attention to detail from Samsung.
Samsung Galaxy A3 (2017): Features
The fingerprint sensor
An important new feature for the Samsung Galaxy A3 (2017): the fingerprint sensor. It works very well and leaves little to be desired, but is not one of the fastest on the market. But it is quite happened that he did not recognize my finger. but overall I am very satisfied.
Samsung Galaxy A3 (2017): Software
On the Galaxy A3 (2017) Android 6.0.1 is installed marshmallow with Samsung's own user interface, here is called TouchWiz. The software we know already very well from the Galaxy S7. Large differences do not exist. I have been never a big fan of Samsung software, especially on the Galaxy S5. TouchWiz always seemed too playful and influenced the performance felt. Since the Galaxy S6 Samsung has done some better here and especially the software on the Grade 7 could convince me.Links Quick Settings, right Upday. © AndroidPIT
The device offers many interesting features. A blue light filter is implemented, which relaxes the eyes in the dark. Upday which is reached by a wiper to the left on the home screen and displays a Daily News, is an interesting feature. However, I personally prefer Google News (or Google Now) as more personalization options are available here.
By default, the icons "standardized", ie they all have the same shape. The icon's Play Store, which normally yes is not round, is located in a separate form to adapt it to the rest of the design. Many CustomIcons use a similar technique when icons were not specifically adapted. However, you do not like that, this option can be disabled. In the display settings to find the desired function. Also Smartstay is on the Galaxy A3 (2017) is implemented. Meanwhile, this feature is known, it detects whether your looks at the screen and can be activated this for so long.In the evening, the blue light filter is very pleasant
The Quick Settings Samsung has adjusted slightly. For a single wiping from above notifications and shortcuts are displayed to the main settings. Wipes your down again, all quick settings.
Unfortunately, located on the Galaxy A3 (2017) some bloatware. Especially Apps from Microsoft (Excel, OneNote, PowerPoint, OneDrive, Skype and Word), non-essential Google Apps, Samsung's own apps and Facebook (which can not be uninstalled) are among them.
Samsung Galaxy A3 (2017): Performance
Under the hood of the Galaxy A3 (2017) is an in-house Exynos is 7870 processor. It is a middle class processor with 8 cores with a maximum frequency of 1.6 GHz. As a graphics chip Mali-T830 GPU is used. The user has 2 GB of memory. these specifications are fine for a mid-range device and should any normal user who does not expect too much from his smartphone, in everyday life does not let you down.
In practical terms, especially the internal memory is not satisfactory. Of the 16 GB of main memory only 9.8 GB left over after the initial power. The use of a MicroSD card so here's really a must, especially for those who want to save a lot of multimedia files. Does your smartphone for only rudimentary messenger, phone calls and Co., but these values should be sufficient. These values are unsatisfactory. © AndroidPIT
Therefore, the Bechmark results also fall unsurprisingly not as good:
|Geekbench 4.0 single core||Geekbench 4.0 Multi-Core||PCMark Work Performance||PCMark Storage||3DMark Slingshot Extreme||3DMark Slingshot OpenGL 3.0||3DMark Ice Storm Unlimited||Google Octane|
|Galaxy A3 (2017)||679||3279||3734||3633||311||491||8631||4966|
In everyday life, but the performance is better than one would expect. Even games like Asphalt 8 run without problems and the unit does not overheat it. Multitasking is basically no problem, but you should expect here any speed records.running on the Galaxy A3 (2017) games like Asphalt 8 without much effort
Overall, the unit is running quite smoothly. I noticed no bugs or problems. Only small trailer was with noticed.
Samsung Galaxy A3 (2017): Audio
The Galaxy A (2016) was the only speaker at the bottom. This year, Samsung will change the positioning and moved it to the right edge. I think this is a good decision, because you this is no longer as easy covered. The typical problem is that the sound is silent at a time when you, for example, looks at a video in landscape orientation, no longer exists here. The speaker is now on the right. © AndroidPIT
For a device in this price range, the sound quality is absolutely OK, only the volume is rather disappointing. louder so the sound is, the worse is also its quality; a problem that we know of many smartphones. For the video in between or one or the other game, the sound is adequate. However Would you like to order really listen to music, even over a long period, an investment recommended in a decent Bluetooth speaker.
The Galaxy A3 (2017) are supplied with headphones. Their sound quality is good and they solve the problem of lack of power of the speaker. Their sound is generally good, the audio hardware of the Galaxy A3 (2017) but is not one expected to be the best on the market. For a mid-range device but there is not much to complain here.
Samsung Galaxy A3 (2017): Camera
The main camera of the Galaxy A3 (2017) has a resolution of 13 megapixels, the same resolution as in the camera of the predecessor. The panel has not changed: they still open at f / 1.9. The front camera has, however, changed. Now dissolves with 8 megapixels and has an f / 1.9 aperture. The camera is fortunately not. © AndroidPIT
The camera app is virtually the same as on the Galaxy S7, but has a few less features. especially lacking filter. With a mop to the left to reach the different modes: Auto, Pro, Panorama, Burst, HDR, Night and food. To the right leads to the filters: Daily, maple, cream, deep, memory, forest, warm, classic. With a wipe from above or below to move from the main camera for front camera. In the options, a timer can be set up.The pictures are surprisingly good
The resolution of the main camera can be from 1: 1 (4.7 megapixels) to 4: 3 (13 megapixels) to be set. In the front camera, there are three different aspect ratios 4: 3 (8 megapixels), 16: 9 (6 megapixels) and 1: 1 (6 megapixels). For video resolutions Full HD are (1920 x 1080 pixels), HD (720 x 1280 pixels), 1: 1 (1072 x 1072 pixels) and VGA (640 x 480 pixels) are available.
The focus is fast (even if he can not quite keep up with the Galaxy S7) and the image quality is surprisingly good. Colors are of course represented, and the photos are rich in detail, especially in low light conditions. If the light more complicated, the color reproduction but suffers, as well seen in the picture from my local Kaiser's. Missing light, noise is clearly visible.A little too light ... © AndroidPIT
The pictures of the front camera are also satisfactory, as long plays along the light. Here we find the same problems as the main camera before, but still more pronounced. Some areas outside the focus are too light and thus spoil the image.

Samsung Galaxy A3 (2017): Battery
The battery of the Galaxy A3 (2017) is grown only minimal. From 2300 2350 mAh have become. Thus we are well below the mark of 3,000 mAh, which we are used by many high-end devices now. But the little Galaxy A3 reflected still not bad and come to acceptable terms.Galaxy A3 (2017) lies a 2,350 mAh battery. © AndroidPIT
The benchmark it comes to a pleasing 11 hours, 55 minutes with activated WLAN and mobile network and medium screen brightness. In everyday life the term is convincing. For a smartphone in this price range, this is very good. On a normal day with very active use (different apps, videos, etc.) I came up with a term of 1.5 days. But I am convinced that you can expand to two days this value even without much effort.
Loading the Galaxy A3 (2017) via USB-C port. Unfortunately, this does not mean that it supports a quick charge Technolgie. This depends on the USB standard, which is ultimately used. The values of the power supply are rather standard with 5 volts and 1.55 amperes. In about 1.5 hours, the unit of 26% was charged to 100%. That's ok, but not very good.
Samsung Galaxy A3 (2017): Technical Specifications
|135.4 x 66.2 x 7.9 mm|
|1280 x 720 pixels (312 ppi)|
|6.0.1 - Marshmallow|
|HSPA, LTE, NFC, Bluetooth 4.2|
Samsung wants to address the crowd with this device. And that can also succeed with this waterproof device with fingerprint sensor and a great design for less than 330 euros. The intention is clear: The buyer should not have to deliberately compromising compared to a high-end device. Only the performance of the A3 can not quite keep up with the upper class.
The main arguments of the A3 (2017) are the compact 4.7-inch design and surprisingly good battery life, but also the other values must not hide. The performance is appealing to a middle-class smartphone and sufficient for everyday use. The camera is not the best, but really good for this price.
However, disappointing a factor that unfortunately too often plays a role in Android: The Galaxy A3 (2017) still runs Android 6.0.1 marshmallow. Furthermore, can the small amount of memory left to be desired. Many will feel compelled to buy a MicroSD card. Unfortunately, the price is also a rather negative factor, comparing it with the available competition, such as the Moto G4 Plus. The advantage is that this is one of the few devices that are large and waterproof at 4.7 inches, but will be developed for the benefit of the A3. Should you be looking for such a device, run a few routes to the Samsung Galaxy A3 (2017) over.
